365 Reflect, Absorb, Defend

I have recently completed a course focusing on early detection and skin health in the sun. I wanted to share a snippet for you and also share the importance of choosing the right sun protection. We may be staying at home and have had any holiday plans postponed, however this does not mean you will not need your SPF. A product that should be applied every day of the year is often only applied when we leave the country and are laying by a pool or on the beach. Protection against UV rays is essential for protecting the skin and is the No. 1 anti-ageing tip I can share with you.

The importance of daily protection from UV rays should not be underestimated. It is clear that natural protection (ozone layer) is not enough. Not only do we need to stay out of the midday sun, but also when we are exposed we need to ensure we use protective clothing and effective sunscreen. At the same time, we must enrich the skin with antioxidants and replace vitamins A and C that are destroyed when we are exposed to the sun.

MYTH– higher the SPF = better the protection. Leading studies maintain that an SPF of 15-20 is all that should be used.

Higher SPF creams have minimal added protection, but mean greater concentrations of the chemical sunscreen agents, which in themselves may have unwanted side effects. We absorb sunscreen ingredients, and many causes more damage by having a negative reaction (creating free radicals that damage the skin) when struck with UV rays. So, it is important to be choosing an SPF with protective ingredients.

My recommendation for you:

RAD SPF 15, £19.95, is a face and body sun protection cream with a combination of sun filters and reflectors that assist in fighting against free-radicals

What does RAD stand for:

REFLECTS – the sun’s UV radiation with Titanium Dioxide (mineral found in nature that sits on the skin like a crushed mirror reflecting the UV radiation.

ABSORBS – part of the sun’s UV radiation

DEFENDS – Protects, containing Vitamin C and E which bubble wraps your DNA and Betacarotene that protects against infrared.

How to use – Apply 30 minutes before sun exposure over moisturiser and the key is to reapply every 1.5-2 hours. RAD can be used on your face and body and worn under make-up.
